British Columbia is widely recognized as having some of the best educational environments in Canada. Powell River is no different. The youth of Powell River are treated to an extensive array of options when it comes to education. Powell River has cemented itself as a leader with innovative approaches to learning. Through partnerships with private sector companies, Powell River offers unique and innovative programs for their students, which helps to solidify long term employment in the region.
Powell River’s education system is represented by School District #47. The public education system is responsible for providing primary and secondary education to the roughly 2,100 students within their boundaries. There are six elementary schools (grades K-7), one secondary school (grades 8-12), as well as various alternate schools and distributed learning programs to support home school initiatives. Recently, a French immersion program was established and is available at James Thomson Elementary. The number of classes with more than 30 students has decreased by 96% since 2005/2006 within the district which speaks to the efforts and resilience of district representatives.
