POWELL RIVER COMMUNITY CALENDAR

Blog

As a coastal British Columbia community it isn't surprising that, for decades, Powell River has been heavily involved in two of B.C.'s primary industries: Fisheries and forestry. Even though many people have continued to find work at the Catalyst mill or aboard local fishing boats, a new group of people are bringing new ideas and vision to the city.

They are called many things like “hipsters,” or “urban refugees,” but whatever you call they are moving to Powell River from the big cities to raise their families, buy homes and start businesses. People like Karen Skadsheim, the founder of Townsite Brewery and newly elected city councillor, Nathan and Margot Jantz , owners of 32 Lakes Coffee Roasters, and Melissa Call, owner of Sunshine Organics and Ecossentials Local Market, are just a few examples of the people who have come from all over Canada to Powell River, and with them brought their innovative businesses, which have breathed new air into a city with a lot of history.

Skadsheim, along with other Powell River residents, were featured on a CBC Radio One story on All Points West focused on the revitalization of the city's historic district, Townsite. Obviously newcomers are excited about Powell River, but longtime residents of community are enthusiastic about the opportunities being created.
