WELCOME to Powell River

The Sunshine Coast is a dream destination for people looking for year round recreation, cultural experiences and unforgettable holiday memories. With friendly communities, world-famous hiking and biking trails, tranquil lakes, vibrant festivals and events, and more beaches than you can imagine; endless possibilities are yours to discover.

Great Blue Heron

A frequent flyer in our parts is the Great Blue Heron. Bird watchers and photographers will be surprised to find out just how amenable these local bird celebrities can be when having their photo taken. You can picture them anywhere along the coastline as they search out small fish in the shallows of our many local beaches.

Humpback Whale

While not known as a whale-watching destination, we're happy to see any of our cetacean friends swimming in the Salish Sea. Seeing one of these whales while out on a kayaking or sightseeing excursion is a rare treat and feels like you've won an in-the-wild lottery!

Barred Owl

You'll need to be paying attention in order to spot this feathery visitor to our forests. The barred owl has a distinctive call that sounds like they're saying, "who cooks for you?" They blend in perfectly against the tree trunks of the local flora and fauna.

   EVENTS CALENDAR 2015

Spring Means Herring

We know it's spring when the herring begin to spawn and the feasting begins. Wildlife of all kinds, from whales and sea lions to salmon and the Tla'amin people all feast on the bounty of herring. In a good spawning year the waters along the coastline turn a milky green as millions of tons of herring spawn in the Salish Sea
