Getting Personal: The Art of the Personal Essay @ PRPL

Megan Cole, nonfiction writer and journalist, will discuss the rising popularity of the personal essay and how writers can use it to find their voice.

Essay collections are commonly included in bestseller lists across Canada and the U.S. Readers have always connected to the intimacy found in the words essayists use to make the personal universal. Learn more about the history and current popularity of the essay, hear excerpts from essayists and learn how you can use the genre to share your stories.

More about Megan Cole: Megan has been a journalist for nearly a decade having worked for CBC, Canadian Press, Coast Mountain Culture Magazine, Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine and more. In 2017, Megan edited Water and Wood: Recipes from a Coastal Community. Currently she is enrolled in the master of fine arts program in creative nonfiction at the University of King’s College, and is working on a memoir with a focus on gender and mental health, and several personal essays which will be published this spring.
