The Powell River Public Library wants to keep you engaged and learning, and we work hard to deliver resources and programming to piqué your interests. Here are five ways we are bringing more than just books to you.
1. Stock up on eBooks and eAudio (from home!)
Headed out for a summer road trip with the family? Then it’s time to stock up on audiobooks for the car! In addition to the recorded books we have on CD, the library offers eAudiobooks to download to your device and take with you. There is a wide selection of both adult and children’s titles in our catalogue.
Ebooks are another way to simplify your summer travels, no need to pack that extra suitcase of warm-weather reading, just tuck your tablet in your bag and go. Never used a tablet, or haven’t got one of your own? Not to worry, we also loan Kindles pre-loaded with mystery, fiction, non-fiction or children’s titles.
2. Explore Programming
From memoir writing courses and daycare story times, to our Campfire Sessions and monthly Board Games by Night, the library has a lot going on. We have four great program coordinators who work hard to bring interesting and inspiring programming to Powell River. We can’t wait to get into our new home at the Crossroads location so we can provide more programming right in the library.
3. Attend Cultural Events
The library brings talented authors and professionals from near and far to share their skills, expertise and experience with Powell River. In the last year we hosted a writer in residence, took part in the Celebration of Cultural Diversity and the Aurora Festival and have also highlighted many local and national authors and their works. Those are just a few of the events we hosted or took part in, check in at the Library or online to see what is coming up next.
4. Learn a New Language
“The sum of human wisdom is not contained in any one language”... The words of Ezra Pound ring true to language learners. In your quest to pick up a few key phrases of Japanese, or become fluent in Portuguese the Library has what you need. Beyond books and CDs, the library recently added Mango Language Learning to its list of digital resources. Login and learn to speak French, Mandarin, Arabic or even Pirate—yarrr.
5. Privileges at Other Libraries
Did you know that you can access books and resources from other libraries while you are away from Powell River? The BC OneCard provides BC residents access to public libraries across the province. Just show your home library card, ID and proof of residency to obtain the card. Returning materials is stress free too, materials borrowed from a BC OneCard library can be returned to any other library in the system, free of charge. Did you forget to return that book you picked up in Vancouver? No problem, just return it to PRPL and we’ll send it back for you.
