What makes a community special is it's people and for so many people making the move to Powell River the reason is often about family. Powell River is an ideal place to start and raise a family. The safe neighbourhoods with streets where kids can learn to ride bikes or play street hockey are where many memories are made. In addition to the comfort of a safe community Powell River also has a number of resources that support parents, guardians and help children thrive.

Powell River's Family Place invites all families with new children to a place where they can meet new people, and find support in raising great, happy and healthy kids. Family Place is a centrally located space with a clothing exchange, a quite place for moms to breastfeed, along with computer access and support for immigrant families.

Other family resources include the BOND (Babies Open New Doors) pre-natal nutritional program which provides support both during pregnancy and for 6 months after delivery along with weekly group meetings including a healthy snack, weekly food vouchers and vitamin supplements, individual nutritional counselling, and cooking demonstrations with easy recipes to make at home.

The Powell River Literacy Council promotes literacy and learning in Powell River with programs like the Parent-Tot Group for parents with kids ages 0 to three, Ages and Stages which educates parents about what to do with their children before school entry and to inform them about how their children are doing in comparison to their peers.

The focus of Success by 6 is to ensure that children ages 0 to six develop the emotional, social, cognitive, and physical skills they need as they enter school. The Orca Bus, which is an initiative of Success by 6, The United Way and School District #47, delvers a variety of early childhood programs to all areas of our community.
